An exciting new way to learn about careers and how and where to get the education and skills needed for those careers is “On The Job,” a new weekly television program produced by AIDT. The show premieres Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2:30 p.m. on Alabama Public Television and adds to the state’s many workforce education opportunities.

“‘On The Job’ is designed to make sure that Alabama citizens all across the state know about new job opportunities, including better paying jobs, and, not only job locations and skill requirements needed, but also how and where they can improve themselves to get a specific job that interests them,” said AIDT Director Ed Castile.

From aerospace engineering to zoo keeping, the show will provide information needed to get skills for the career wanted. The November 4 premiere will show what several major aerospace manufacturers in Alabama are doing to increase their workforce. It will also show the first steps provided at Enterprise-Ozark Community College needed to grow a career in aerospace, and the HUNCH program in Huntsville, home of NASA’s youngest aerospace workers already pursuing their dream.

Job seekers also will be able to go online for additional details about available jobs and educational skills required to get them. The latest broadcast and archived videos of past shows will be posted on the web site each week after the show’s premiere.

“On The Job” provides on-site details about employers and career-related educational opportunities throughout Alabama schools, colleges and education centers. Viewers will see on-site activities in Alabama career education and training services, and watch actual on-the-job production and performance in a variety of careers. Each show will also feature Alabama’s Ready To Work training that helps people prepare for the job market.

"On The Job" can be viewed throughout the state on APT which operates 18 transmitters–nine analog and nine digital–that cover the state. APT operates stations in Huntsville, WHIQ Channel 25; Florence, WFIQ Channel 36; Mt. Cheaha, WCIQ Channel 7; Birmingham, WBIQ Channel 10; Demopolis, WIIQ Channel 41; Montgomery, WAIQ Channel 26; Louisville/Texasville, WGIQ Channel 43; Dozier, WDIQ Channel 2; and, Mobile, WEIQ Channel 42.

“On The Job” adds a new element to Alabama Public Television’s other adult and workplace education programs including “GED Connection” and “Workplace Essential Skills.”  These programs are broadcast daily on APT and can also be viewed on-demand at APT’s website, aptv.org.

AIDT, an institute of the Alabama College System, encourages economic development through job-specific training. Training services are offered in many areas, and are available at no charge to new and expanding businesses and job seekers throughout the State. “On The Job” is part of AIDT’s mission to provide quality workforce development for Alabama's new and existing businesses, and to expand the opportunities of its citizens through the jobs these businesses create.

Established in 1955, APT was America’s first statewide public television network and a model for other states in the nation and for television broadcasters in other countries. Affiliated with the Public Broadcasting System, it is a seven-day-a-week educational resource for Alabamians of all ages through online services, analog and digital television programming, documentary production and outreach activities. APT recently received four Southeastern Regional Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for documentaries produced on the Montgomery Bus Boycott and on contemporary Alabama artist Thornton Dial.

"This is a great opportunity for the future of South Alabama’s young students and others in the work force for certification to meet industrial needs for excellent skill sets. I am excited for your future projects and new developments to come through the AIDT team that will impact the growth of our communities," a comment from one of our visitors.

The training program teaches aluminum and steel welding techniques and shipfitting  as well as other shipbuilding skills based on employers’ production processes. Trainees also demonstrate work ethics and experience in related skills while in training which assists employer hiring selections.
