Riley: Project first of many opportunities for Shoal By Kenda Williams TimesDaily Staff Writer National Alabama Corp. is one step closer to becoming a reality in the Shoals. Officials from National Steel Car of Hamilton, Ontario, as well as close to 300 attendees, including economic development, business and political leaders across the state, celebrated the official groundbreaking at the site in Barton on Thursday. National Alabama Corp. is under construction in Barton Riverfront Industrial Park in Colbert County. The $350 million project is slated for completion in late 2008 or early 2009. The company plans to employ 1,800 people, producing approximately 8,000 railway freight cars annually. Gov. Bob Riley attended the groundbreaking and said he believes the local community is the biggest reason why the company decided to situate itself in the state. Groundbreaking held for new facility in the Shoals WAFF-TV, Huntsville Ground breaking ceremonies were held today in the Shoals for a new railcar manufacturer. The new plant, National Alabama Corporation, is in the Barton community, near Muscle Shoals and Florence. It was an opportunity for the community to meet and greet these industry leaders, and for local leaders willing to cross city and county lines to land this project. Elected officials and economic leaders were praising the community. "Ladies and gentlemen if you continue to do what you have done to bring the project here, you're going to see the northwest part of this state explode in economic development," said Governor Bob Riley. "The community came together. It's a very large community and they came together as one....under the Governor's leadership and acted in concert. And they absolutely deserved to get this plant," said Gregory Aziz, CEO of National Alabama Corp.
