Alabama unemployment rate 3.8 percent
National rate remains 4.6 percent
from the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations

Alabama posted a 3.8 percent unemployment rate in August, a modest increase from 3.7 percent in July. The jobless rate in August 2006 was 3.6 percent.

“Between July and August non-durable goods within the manufacturing sector lost 500 jobs statewide,” says Tom Surtees, Alabama Department of Industrial Relations director. “The 3.8 percent unemployment rate represents 82,681 unemployed Alabamians, compared to 81,498 the previous month and 79,980 in August 2006.”

The latest comparable national unemployment rate for August is 4.6 percent, unchanged from July. The national unemployment rate in August 2006 was 4.7 percent.

The lowest county rates for August are:
Shelby 2.7%
Baldwin 3.1%
Madison and Blount 3.2%
Tuscaloosa and Cullman 3.4%.

The highest county rates for August are:
Bullock 10.6%
Wilcox 10.2%
Perry 9.6%
Dallas 9.3%
Lowndes 7.7%

Over the year, there was a net gain of 27,700 jobs in wage and salary employment. The majority of the annual growth occurred in
trade, transportation, and utilities +8,100
professional and business services +6,000
government +5,600
leisure and hospitality +4,600
educational and health services +3,700
construction +2,800

The majority of employment losses occurred in manufacturing (-3,400).
