OnTheJob@ChristmasGet "On The Job" for Christmas

Food and friendliness focus the attention of many people at Christmas, and those elements focus the attention of employers every day, particularly those who produce food and provide hospitality. "On The Job" will create a good taste for jobs in food and hospitality production in the Dec. 23 and Dec. 30 shows.

This Sunday, at 2:30 p.m. on your local APT channel, "On The Job" will feature Whaley Pecans, Sister Schubert Homemade Rolls, Chrissie's Treats, the Montgomery Area Foodbank, Habitat for Humanity and the Montgomery Christmas Parade. On Dec. 30, "On The Job" will feature hospitality management training at Faulkner State Community College which includes instruction in culinary arts, hotel/restaurant management, pastry/baking/confectionary, and golf course management/landscape technology.

Another feature in the December 23 show is Bobby Jon Drinkard, a Troy native and former "Survivor" contestant. Bobby Jon, shown in the photo here, is now one of the "On The Job" producers with AIDT. Improve your employability through
SKILLS@WORK

Prepare for your next job interview. Make sure you have the computer skills needed for work. Learn about diversity and sexual harassment prevention. AIDT's Skills@Work teaches these and other basic workplace skills needed for work. Training topics include:
  • Employability Skills – Work ethics, team skills, diversity, sexual harassment prevention
  • Communication – Verbal, nonverbal, written
  • Interview T.I.P.S. – Applications, interviews, follow-up letters
  • Introduction to Computers – Using MS Windows, email, MS Word, MS Excel 
Classes are currently scheduled each Tuesday and Thursday, January 22 through February 28 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the AIDT Montgomery Training Center, 15 Technology Court. Call Sheila Helms at 334-242-2670 to register.

The six-week training session is open at no cost for job seekers ranging from high school age through adult. Pre-registration is required. Successful Skills@Work participants will receive a certificate for class completion. Those who meet qualifications for jobs AIDT is helping to fill will get special consideration for pre-employment interviews.

Process Improvement Assessment
AIDT Process Improvement Assessment, provided at no cost, is designed to examine and analyze processes to identify improvement opportunities and training needs. After assessment and analysis, the AIDT team provides a report that includes positive comments, negative comments and suggestions. AIDT training is available to show employees what improvements are needed and how they can be made. Leadership Skills – Feb. 5-6-7
Leadership Skills I, recommended for first-line/team leaders/new supervisors, is scheduled February 5-6-7 at the AIDT Training Center in Montgomery from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. To register, contact Connie Sator at 334-280-4453, or register online. Leadership Skills II is a follow-up course to Leadership Skills I, and includes more advanced topics of supervision. The class is offered in a 2-day format. Interview T.I.P.S. – Jan. 15 & 17
Interview T.I.P.S. workshops, conducted in two four-hour sessions, include:
  • Preparation for Interviews
  • Presentation at Interviews
  • Follow-Up after Interviews

Maritime training in Mobile

AIDT is seeking applicants for a free 10-week welding training program featuring flux-core, aluminum MIG, shipfitting, oxy fuel cutting, plasma cutting and carbon arc gouging. Classes are conducted during day and evening hours. Download a Maritime Welding and Shipfitting application online from www.aidt.edu/apply. Mail the completed application to your local Career Center.

Mobile area high school students may enroll in the next High School Maritime Apprenticeship class, also conducted by AIDT, available in January. Apprenticeship applications are available from high school counselors. Apprentice students receive $8 hourly wages while in training. Successful completors at least 18 years old get full-time maritime jobs.
