Job help coming to DeKalb  | read this item

classDeKalb County’s unemployment rate has risen sharply in the past year, but an event and a new resource
opening on Friday will hopefully combat that, according to state officials.

To help assist those who have lost their jobs or may be looking for a career change, several state
agencies will be on hand at a Retool and Retrain for Reemployment Expo that will take place at the Tom
Bevill Lyceum on the campus of Northeast Alabama Community College.

“Over the past two years, the area has suffered with some plant closings. This event is designed to help
those displaced workers,” said Linda Bryan, director of marketing and communications with the
Governor’s Office of Workforce Development….

Huntingdon students wrap up degree work
A unique program partnering Huntingdon College and Jefferson Davis Community College has George
Hendricks within weeks of completing a four-year degree — 25 years after he earned his associate’s
degree and started a family and career….

Five students in Huntingdon’s adult degree completion program are set to complete their curriculum Aug.
20 and will participate in commencement activities in May 2010 with several other students from the
Brewton program and others across the state.

Huntingdon began its Adult Degree Completion Program in Brewton in January 2008. Classes are held
every five weeks, with each semester encompassing 15 weeks. Students with an associate’s degree can
complete their bachelor’s in two years, taking one night class per week or can double up on some
classes and finish as quickly as one year. Jernigan said in order to double up in the program students
must receive permission and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

“I’ve seen so many of students with tears in their eyes grateful that they are able to receive a quality
education close to home where otherwise they couldn’t travel out of town two or three nights a week to
receive,” Jernigan said….

Thirty-four students are currently enrolled in classes, which are held on the Jefferson Davis Community
College campus in Brewton, Jernigan said.

“That’s more than they (Huntingdon) expected in this amount of time,” she said. “So they are extremely
pleased. In no small measure the success of this program is due because the support of Jefferson Davis
Community College and our community leaders.”….

Hendricks said the program afforded him an opportunity that he thought had passed him by after he
received his associate’s degree in 1984 and began a family and career, never completing his degree….
